Posing basics for beginners
Simple rules to help you look natural and confident on camera, even at your very first shoot.
A good pose is not about freezing; it is about deliberate movement. Most photographers prefer talent who move calmly between positions over those who wait to be directed for every frame.
Five core rules
- Put your weight on one foot so the stance looks more relaxed.
- Leave a little space between your arms and your body.
- Angle your shoulders slightly instead of facing the camera square on.
- Relax your hands and let your fingers curve naturally.
- Shift your position slightly with every frame.
Facial expression
Expression starts with the eyes. Think of a real moment that fits the mood, such as good news or a quiet thought, and your face will change on its own without looking forced.
Practise in front of a mirror for ten minutes a day for a week, then film yourself on your phone and compare. You will see a clear improvement.
And remember that modest fashion has poses of its own: showing how an abaya or thobe falls matters more than the sharp angles that suit other kinds of fashion.
